RAMI KHOURI on Palestinian-Lebanese relations

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
By Belfer Center

“Conditions are now ripe for all parties to make serious advances on this issue because both the Lebanese and Palestinian authorities have publicly and officially (and, I would say, courageously) signaled their desire to go beyond past disputes and sensitivities, and rectify an intolerable situation that demeans both the Palestinians and the Lebanese communities.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Hope for Palestinian-Lebanese Relations,” which Agence Global released on November 23, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on support for Palestinians

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
By Belfer Center

“The world has slowly tired of the Palestinians in their current political mode, and focused on other issues, because the prospects of a negotiated Arab-Israeli peace seem slim, as diplomatic attempts to reach a full peace have repeatedly confirmed in the last three decades.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Why Support for Palestine Ebbs,” which Agence Global released on November 18, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on Palestinian politics

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

“Mahmoud Abbas should cut short his silly little melodrama, resign as he said he would, and pave the way for a needed revival of effective Palestinian national leadership.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Palestinians Need Change — Not Charades,” which Agence Global released on November 16, 2009.

“The nature of discontent exhibited by Arab youth today is similar to that which drove the liberation movements of the Soviet Bloc a generation ago.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “The Wall Will Fall in the Arab World,” which Agence Global released on November 11, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on the Arab police states

Monday, November 9th, 2009
By Belfer Center

“Police state-style regimes that have long kept tabs on their citizens have had the tables turned on them: The Arab state is now under surveillance by its own citizens.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Turning the Tables on Arab Police States,” which Agence Global released on November 9, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on the Middle East peace process

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
By Belfer Center

“My impression is that the Obama administration still has not formulated its total policy or strategy on Arab-Israeli peace-making, because the political calculus for this — involving domestic as well as foreign policy — is too complex and costly for a young administration that has more important battles to fight.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Bad Month for Middle East Peace,” which Agence Global released on November 4, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on Israeli accountability

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

“The importance of the Goldstone Report was captured in Goldstone’s statement to the UN Human Rights Council, in which he stressed that pursuing justice for all is critical for ensuring accountability, which in turn is vital for ending impunity in the use of violence against civilians.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “The Need for Israeli Lawfulness and Accountability,” which Agence Global released on November 2, 2009.

VALI NASR on the Muslim middle class

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009
By Belfer Center

“…[T]errorism as a whole will stop resonating with a truly integrated Muslim middle class—a process similar to what occurred in Latin America in the 1990s. Those with a stake in commerce and trade will not subscribe to destructive ideas that endanger their futures. The alienation and rage many Muslims feel toward the West is a product of historical grievances but has been greatly aggravated by their exclusion from the global economy.”

Vali Nasr, a senior fellow of the Dubai Initiative, wrote “Economics Versus Extremism,” which Newsweek published on November 2, 2009.

DJAVAD SALEHI-ISFAHANI on Iran

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009
By Belfer Center

“General subsidies have been a big part of the welfare state in post-revolution Iran. They grew out of the rationing system during the war and the government’s commitment to the poor, and over time increased in volume, especially for energy products as world energy prices increased while consumer prices in Iran stayed low. The results have been both good and bad.”

Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, a research fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative, wrote “Iran: Reform of Energy Subsidies,” which Monthly Review published on October 30, 2009.

RAMI KHOURI on Tunisia’s election

Friday, October 30th, 2009
By Belfer Center

“Tunisia’s ‘re-elected’ President Ben Ali typifies Arab World leaders who stay in power as long as biology allows them. They control all security, police and military — and thereby, the economic, educational and cultural life of the country.”

Rami Khouri, a senior fellow with the Belfer Center’s Dubai Initiative and director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the American University of Beirut, wrote “Tunisia’s Election as Laughingstock,” which Agence Global released on October 28, 2009.
