Description:
This presentation is an interim report on a long-term research project that aims to describe and explain the political development of the
high-technology industry in the United States since the U.S. government's antitrust suit against IBM in 1969. Prof. Hart will provide data
that track political activity over time, including the industry's lobbying presence, associations, involvement in campaigns, and appearances
before Congressional committees. His interpretation focuses on the factors that have pulled the industry to Washington and how these
factors have changed over time. Although the high-tech industry has a somewhat deserved reputation for being apolitical, this analysis
suggests that the latest generation of high-tech companies are likely to become politically active earlier in their development as businesses
than their counterparts in previous cohorts.
