PAST EVENT

Tearing Down the Wall

Reception
Series: Seminar
Open to the Public - NEW LOCATION
November 9, 2009
5:30-7:30 p.m.

Description:

Background from the McCloy Fellowship Director, Matthias Risse:

"For these last days already, we've had a virtual wall on display in the rotunda, which will continue to be there until Monday evening. This virtual wall is a rather intriguing art project that we currently have on loan and that allows for a virtual tour of Berlin in the area of the wall prior to November 1989. Via a joystick you can walk along the wall both in the West and in the East, and in fact, if you don't be careful, you might even have a virtual encounter with DDR Volkspolizei (GDR People's Police), who might arrest you for suspicious behavior.

November 9 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall, and thus like no other event stands for the end of the Cold War. At the reception on Monday we will have some remarks by the German Consul General, Friedrich Loehr, and by the Kennedy School's very own Professor Stephen Walt. After that, we will also have some symbolic tearing-down-the-wall action. (The virtual nature of the enterprise, however, will unfortunately not make it possible to take home bits of the wall.)"
