"A Conversation with the Honorable Ellen Tauscher," a Belfer Center Director's Lunch with Ellen Tauscher
Series: Belfer Center Directors' Luncheon
RSVP required - Belfer Center Library, Littauer-369
November 30, 2011
The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Directors' Lunch with Ellen Tauscher, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
At the 2011 Global Zero Conference at George Washington University, Tauscher, speaking on the future of arms control with Russia, set the vision asserted by the U.S.: "Our goal is to move our relationship from one based on mutually assured destruction to one that is based on mutually assured stability."
While a California Congresswoman in 2007, Tauscher chaired the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee and was the driving force behind the requirement in the FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill that the next administration undertake a formal nuclear posture review (NPR). When President Obama and Secretary Clinton asked her to assume the duties of Under Secretary of State for Arms Control in 2009, Tauscher resigned her congressional post and has since devoted her efforts to advancing arms control and nuclear security goals. In 2010, the U.S. issued a new Nuclear Posture Review, hosted the first ever Nuclear Summit and signed a Nuclear Arms treaty with Russia — all in no small way due to the tireless work and leadership of Under Secretary Ellen Tauscher. These accomplishments were the result of years of effort in which Tauscher played a key role.
Before winning a seat in Congress, Under Secretary Tauscher spent 14 years working on Wall Street. She was one of the first women to hold a seat on the New York Stock Exchange and later served as an officer of the American Stock Exchange. She is a graduate of Seton Hall University.
