Description:

Soli Özel, a Turkish journalist, professor, and Spring 2013 Fisher Family Fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project, will deliver his keynote address on Turkey's vision for its growing role of in modern international affairs

Soli Özel is the foreign news editor and a columnist for the Gazete Habertürk, one of Turkey’s largest daily newspapers. Since 2010, he has also served on the faculty of Kadir Has University in the Department of International Relations.

Professor Özel has worked in the intersection of academia, foreign policy, and the press for over two decades. From 1998 until 2007, he was the Editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy-Türkiye, and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Private View, the quarterly publication of TUSIAD, Turkey’s top business association. He has also written as a columnist for several of Turkey’s most popular newspapers, including Sabah (2002-2009).

After studying at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and University of California, Berkeley, Professor Özel taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1988-1989) and Johns Hopkins SAIS (1993-1995) before returning to teach in Turkey at Bogazici University (1995-1996) and Bilgi University (1995-2010). He has been published in numerous regional and international academic journals in both English and Turkish, and his first book, published in 2009, is entitled Rebuilding a Partnership: Turkish-American Relations for a New Era—A Turkish Perspective.
