The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Lunch with Piet de Klerk, Ambassador at Large, for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Netherlands, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Piet de Klerk was recently the Netherlands “Sherpa” for the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.
From 2011 to mid-2013, Ambassador de Klerk was the Netherlands Ambassador to Jordan. Prior to that role, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Netherlands at the United Nations in New York. From 2003 to 2007, he was the Dutch roving Ambassador for Human Rights. Ambassador de Klerk was on loan to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, where he was Director of the Office of External Relations and Policy Coordination from July 1998 until August 2003. Between 1980 and 1998, Ambassador de Klerk worked in different positions at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in The Hague, Vienna and Bonn.
Ambassador de Klerk is a member of the group of governmental experts that advises the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty. Between June 2011 and June 2012, he was the Chairman of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. From 1992 to 1998 Ambassador de Klerk was a member of SAGSI and the IAEA Standing Advisory Group on Safeguards Implementation.
Ambassador de Klerk studied physics, mathematics and philosophy at the Universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Milan.
