The nation of Kiribati comprises 32 atolls and one high island (Banaba Island) scattered across almost 4,000 km of the Pacific Ocean, straddling the equator. With the majority of atolls little more than six meters above sea level, Kiribati is uniquely vulnerable to the effects of global warming-induced sea level rise. Under President Tong’s leadership, Kiribati recently created the world’s largest marine reserve, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, which is 410,500 square km in size.

In order to make a contribution to avoiding carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions and mitigating climate change, climate-friendly technologies must be deployed at considerable scale. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is one such technology. In this talk, Jeff will discuss the returns to scale for CCS as the spatial coupling of an integrated system of technologies. He will also discuss technological learning and innovation in managing CO2 injection projects, and how such technological change has occurred over time.
