Experience

Marwa is a Research Fellow with the Dubai Initiative at the Belfer Center, and a third-year Ph.D. student in the Health Policy concentration at The Heller School for Social Policy at Brandeis University. Before resuming her graduate studies, Marwa worked for Abt. Associates Inc. in Iraq with the Iraq Health System Strengthening Program IHSS, on health financing and resource allocation issues. Marwa is from Egypt, where she trained and worked for a number of years on the Health Sector Reform Program as a project officer, research analyst and later as a health information systems specialist. Marwa is interested in examining the issues involved in the health labor market in the Middle East, health financing for serious illnesses, and health financing for poor and vulnerable groups.

She has a Masters degree in Health Financing from the University of London (LSE & LSHTM), a Masters in International Health Policy from Brandeis University and a B.A. of Commerce from the University of Menoufia in Egypt. Marwa is a native Arabic speaker, is fluent in English, and has a good command of French.

Economic Analysis of the Nurse Shortage in Egypt

The health sector in Egypt suffers from a severe shortage of qualified nurses (nurses with at least 2 years of post high school nursing education) and a much less apparent perceived/real shortage of all-type nurses. This paper examines the nurse labor market in Egypt for evidence of such shortages and explores potential reasons behind them. It was submitted as part of the Dubai School of Government's working paper series.
