Since the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) emerged 50 years ago to counter the dominant power blocs of the Northern Hemisphere, a new global order has taken shape. In her June 2011 discussion paper, “Diplomacy and Nuclear Non-Proliferation: Navigating the Non-Aligned Movement,” Belfer Center fellow Yvonne Yew argues that developing countries now stand at a pivotal moment for nuclear engagement.

"The Seesaw Media Coverage of Japan’s Nuclear Crisis"

As Japan’s nuclear energy crisis continues to unfold at the Fukushima Daiichi power station, the news media have struggled to sort through confusing, and often conflicting, information about damage to the crippled plant and its threat to public safety. The challenges of covering this situation were discussed in the seminar “In the Shadow of the Japan Crisis: The Seesaw Coverage of Nuclear Power,” the last in a three-part Clean Energy and the Media series cosponsored by Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center and the Shorenstein Center for Press, Politics and Public Policy.

Senior representatives from government, industry, finance, and academia convened at the Harvard Kennedy School to discuss the question in an offtherecord workshop on energy technology demonstration in December. The workshop was organized and hosted by the Belfer Center’s Energy Technology Innovation Policy research group.

When Cristine Russell chose nuclear energy as the topic of the third seminar in the Belfer Center spring series, “Clean Energy and the Media," no one knew of the radioactive disaster that would unfold in Japan. Two weeks after an earthquake and tsunami crippled reactor cooling mechanisms at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the seminar's discussion with scientists and journalists provided valuable insight at a critical point in the crisis.
