Experience

Clark A. Miller is a postdoctoral fellow in Science, Technology, and Public Policy at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. for radar remote sensing studies of the Earth''s upper atmosphere from Cornell University in 1996. Since graduating, he has pursued research applying the social studies of science and technology to the science and politics of the global environment through postdoctoral positions in Cornell''s Department of Science and Technology Studies and Harvard''s Global Environmental Assessment Project. Beginning in 1999-2000, he will take a position as an assistant professor of science, technology, and public policy in the Department of Political Science at Iowa State University and as a policy research fellow in the International Institute for Theoretical and Applied Physics, a joint initiative of Iowa State University and UNESCO. Clark''s research traces the production, validation, and use of scientific knowledge about the Earth''s environment in institutions of global environmental governance. His work asks, in particular, how quantitative standards have come to underpin international cooperation as measures of trust between countries, how the transplanting of science into new cultural contexts affects processes of social and political change, and how instrumental norms and practices have emerged and spread in postwar international relations. He is currently a co-investigator on an NSF grant "Sustainable Knowledge about the Global Environment" and is co-editing "Changing the Atmosphere: Science and the Politics of Global Warming." In addition to work on these projects and finishing up several articles, he hopes to find time next year to begin writing a monograph.
