Jahangir Hajiyev is an international investor in Europe, Eurasia, the US and Israel.† He is former Chairman of the Board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), which he built from a small shell of banking assets inherited from the Soviet era into a globally respected international standards bank and multi-sector holding of $12 billion in assets at the behest of the late President Heydar Aliyev.
Dr. Hajiyev began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations serving as Department Head from 1993-1995.† He joined the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) starting as Chairman of the Credit Committee and Director of Credit and Investments from 1995-2001. †Dr. Hajiyev served as Chairman of the Board of IBA from 2001 to 2015.† Under his leadership, IBA established representative offices in leading financial capitals of Europe, the Middle East and the US and created a licensed Islamic banking franchise for Azerbaijan to service the Russia/CIS region.† IBA also became the first Caspian region member of the Financial Services Industry Partnership of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Partnership Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) and a charter member of the Global Growth Community (GGC) where Dr. Hajiyev served on the Forumís Advisory Board for the ďsummer DavosĒ in China.† Dr. Hajiyev is former Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Baku Stock Exchange (BSE).
Dr. Hajiyev has led a distinguished career in international banking.† He received the first International Banking Award "Platinum Key" of the Moscow-based CIS Finance & Banking Council (FBC) and the Banking Association of Central and Eastern Europe (BACEE). †He was awarded the United Kingdomís Queen Victoria Commemorative Medal for contributions to banking and social programs.
Dr. Hajiyev received Bachelorís and Masterís degrees at the Azerbaijan State University in the Faculty of Oriental Studies in Arabic studies, an MBA at the University of Texas on an Amoco Fellowship and a PhD in International Economics from the Institute of Economics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is fluent in Azeri, Russian, English and Arabic.
