Born in 1961, Jahangir Hajiyev received Bachelorís and Masterís degrees at the Azerbaijan State University in the Faculty of Oriental Studies in Arabic studies, an MBA at the University of Texas on an Amoco Fellowship and a PhD in International Economics at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is fluent in Azeri, Russian, English and Arabic.

From 1993-1995, Dr. Hajiyev served as Department Head of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations. In 1995-2001, Dr. Hajiyev joined the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), starting as Chairman of the Credit Committee and Director of the Credit and Investments. From 2001 to the present he has served as Chairman of the Board.

Dr. Hajiyev has led a distinguished career in international banking. He received the First International Banking Award "Platinum Key" of the Moscow-based CIS Finance and Banking Council (FBC), of which he serves as Vice President, with the Banking Association of Central and Eastern Europe (BACEE). He was awarded the Queen Victoria Commemorative Medal for contributions to banking and social programs and is a member of the Senate of the European Economic Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry in Brussels. IBA is the first regional member of the Financial Services Industry Partnership of the World Economic Forum, where Dr. Hajiyev is co-signatory among global CEOs of the Partnership Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) and the Forumís Cyber Resilience Initiative. He is Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of the Britain Azerbaijan Business Council (BABC); Member of the International Advisory Council of Asia House (UK); Board Member of the Nowruz Commission (U.S.). Dr. Hajiyev also serves as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Baku Stock Exchange (BSE).
