Joseph Nye, a Harvard distinguished service professor and member of the Belfer Center’s board of directors, offers an insightful analysis of the changing nature and use of power in his new book, The Future of Power. In the book, he describes two types of power shifts occurring in this century—power transition and power diffusion.

On June 3, 2010, current and former members of Harvard University's Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, gathered at Harvard's Eliot House to celebrate PAUL DOTY's 90th birthday. This event, which followed Harvard's 2010 Paul Doty Lecture, included numerous stories and praise for Doty, who founded what is now the Belfer Center and the Molecular and Cellular Biology department.

We celebrate Paul Doty, founder and director emeritus of the Belfer Center and member of our board of directors, as well as emeritus professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School and Mallinckrodt Professor of Biochemistry, emeritus, at Harvard. We share a snapshot of Paul's life and his contributions to science and international security. At 90, he continues his outstanding contributions to the Belfer Center and global community through his ongoing research, insights, and guidance.

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is the hub of research, teaching, and training in international security affairs and diplomacy, environmental and resource issues, science and technology policy, and conflict studies at Harvard Kennedy School. The heart of the Center is its resident research community and more than 60 research fellows drawn from governments, academia, and the public and private sector. The Center's new 2010–2011 fellows come from 15 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Five years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, one stand-out recovery success story is the neighborhood of Broadmoor and its unique collaboration with Harvard Kennedy School through the Belfer Center's "Broadmoor Project." While the determined community continues its renewal today, Broadmoor has become a model of disaster recovery efforts for other neighborhoods, cities, and even countries.

Belfer Center alumni Gary Samore and Laura Holgate played a key role in organizing President Obama's Nuclear Security Summit in April. Additionally, Matthew Bunn's Securing the Bomb 2010 was released the day the Summit began, and Graham Allison provided attending leaders with materials that included a nuclear terrorism threat assessment and fact sheet.

"Volcker, Holdren Headline International Council Debate of Critical Issues"

Paul Volcker and John Holdren headlined the annual meeting of the Belfer Center International Council. Volcker, chair of President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board, launched a thought-provoking discussion of "The American Economy, the Global Economy, and the Financial Order." Holdren provided an insightful look into the Administration's policies regarding science and technology.
