When China’s President Hu Jintao visited the United States in January, observers noted that the meetings between Hu and President Obama were treading carefully around what Belfer Center Director Graham Allison calls the “‘Thucydides Trap’—that deadly combination of calculation and emotion that, over the years, can turn healthy rivalry into antagonism or worse” (New York Times, Jan. 22, 2011).

We share a snapshot of Paul's life and his contributions to science and international security. At 90, he continues his outstanding contributions to the Belfer Center and global community through his ongoing research, insights, and guidance.

"Center Supports Summit Efforts to Prevent Nuclear Terrorism"

Belfer Center alumni Gary Samore and Laura Holgate played a key role in organizing President Obama's Nuclear Security Summit in April. Additionally, Matthew Bunn's Securing the Bomb 2010 was released the day the Summit began, and Graham Allison provided attending leaders with materials that included a nuclear terrorism threat assessment and fact sheet.

"Volcker, Holdren Headline International Council Debate of Critical Issues"

Paul Volcker and John Holdren headlined the annual meeting of the Belfer Center International Council. Volcker, chair of President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board, launched a thought-provoking discussion of "The American Economy, the Global Economy, and the Financial Order." Holdren provided an insightful look into the Administration's policies regarding science and technology.
