In addition, the Winter newsletter spotlights, Dan Schrag, director of Harvard's Center for the Environment, and features a Q&A with Kelly Sims Gallagher, director of the Belfer Center's Energy Technology Innovation Project (ETIP).

The Winter 2003-04 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features the Belfer Center's launch of the "American Primacy and Its Discontents" project to consider the implications of America's conspicuous dominance in world affairs. The project is to explore the meaning and impact of this primacy. This issue also features a United Nations symposium opened by Belfer Center Science, Technology, and Public Policy Director John P. Holdren on the risks and financial implications of global warming.

"Former Senator Sam Nunn, founder and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative... and former Senator Richard Lugar were awarded the prestigious 2013 Richard E. Neustadt Award at Harvard Kennedy School on May 2... Dean David Ellwood noted that the award is bestowed annually to honor one or more individuals “for creating powerful solutions to public problems, drawing on research and intellectual ideas as appropriate.”

"Still Learning Fresh Lessons from the Cuban Missile Crisis"

Fifty years ago this October, as the Cuban Missile Crisis intensified, the world stood   on the brink of a nuclear war. During 13 terrifying days in October 1962, people around the globe watched as President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev searched for a way to move their countries—and the world—away from the nuclear cliff.

The Belfer Center commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October by encouraging fresh thinking on lessons learned from that dangerous confrontation—and how those lessons can be applied to crises encountered today.

"Center Team Advances Vital Research at Intersection of Water and Energy"

Two years ago, Venkatesh (Venky) Narayanamurti and  Laura Diaz Anadon, director and associate director of the Belfer Center’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy program, set the stage for the Center’s energy research team to zero in on the challenges facing energy and the natural resource essential to it in many countries around the world—water.
