"Painfully Following Iran in the U.S. Media"
Op-Ed
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
One of the most annoying aspects of spending time in the United States, as I have just done with a month’s working visit there, is to follow the news coverage of Iran in the mainstream American media. Well, calling it “news” coverage is a bit of a stretch, because the mainstream American media is not really reporting news about Iran, but rather repackaged ideological attacks and threats that emanate primarily from the American and Israeli governments.

"The Barack and Mahmoud Show"
Op-Ed, Agence Global
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
Dubai Initiative Senior Fellow Rami Khouri writes: Barack Obama and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are very different personalities, but they converge in their fascinating insistence on mixing sensible approaches to some issues with a lack of credibility that is politically numbing -- to the point that they nearly neutralize themselves as serious leaders.

Six Years After 9/11
Magazine or Newspaper Article
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
BEIRUT -- This week’s sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States sees the top American military and diplomatic officials in Iraq speaking to the US Congress about American strategy in Iraq. The juxtaposition is noteworthy: Six years ago, a small band of Al-Qaeda militants attacked the United States and killed some 3000 people. Today, an army of over 160,000 American troops wages a war in Iraq that has seen tens of thousands of people killed since 2003. Neither policy makes much sense to anyone in the world, other than to those fanatics on both sides who decided to pursue these actions.

Growing Up: Americans Reassess Iran
Op-Ed, Agence Global
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
BEIRUT -- From the late 1960s to the early 2000s, the central conflict in the Middle East that spilled over to influence many other domestic and regional issues was the Arab-Israeli conflict, which for most of that period overlapped with the United States-Soviet Union Cold War. In the past decade, the confrontational center of gravity in the Middle East has shifted somewhat to include a new dynamic that sees Iran and some Arab allies together forming a “deterrence and resistance front” that both confronts and engages with the United States, Israel and some conservative Arab parties. As the Iranian-led defiance of the U.S. has linked with the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict, it has become far more difficult for any would-be diplomat and conflict-resolver to achieve a breakthrough on any of the many regional conflicts.

"US National Security and Global Concern"
Op-Ed, Agence Global
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
When President Barack Obama spoke at the US Military Academy recently, and provided a preview of his administration's first national security strategy, he stressed several themes that should be welcomed by the rest of the world, Rami Khouri writes. The new strategy emphasizes international diplomacy and alliance-building over the George W. Bush doctrine of pre-emptive war and unilateral action.

"Iran Should Honor Obama's Courage"
Op-Ed, Agence Global
By Rami Khouri, Senior Fellow, Middle East Initiative
Barack Obama has initiated a courageous first step in diplomacy with Iran. Iran must do likewise. Courage and boldness on both sides can initiate serious diplomatic engagement, which in turn can lead to breakthroughs that transform the entire Middle East.
