The Great American Mission: Modernization and the Construction of an American World Order

The Great American Mission traces how America's global modernization efforts during the twentieth century were a means to remake the world in its own image. David Ekbladh shows that the emerging concept of modernization combined existing development ideas from the Depression. He describes how ambitious New Deal programs like the Tennessee Valley Authority became symbols of American liberalism's ability to marshal the social sciences, state planning, civil society, and technology to produce extensive social and economic change. For proponents, it became a valuable weapon to check the influence of menacing ideologies such as Fascism and Communism.

Megan Mackenzie, Former ISP/Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP) Research Fellow, 2008–2009, contributed an article—"Securitization and Desecuritization: Female Soldiers and the Reconstruction of Women in Post-Conflict Sierra Leone"— to the recent special issue of Security Studies on Feminist Contributions.

Former ISP/WAPPP Research Fellow Laura Sjoberg, 2005–2006, served as the editor of the special issue and wrote the introduction.

Neophytos Loizides, ISP/Intrastate Conflict Program Research Fellow (2003–2005), is a Lecturer at Queens University Belfast, School of Politics, International Studies, and Philosophy.

Securing the Bomb 2008

Associate Professor of Public Policy and Project on Managing the Atom Co-Principal Investigator Matthew Bunn provides a comprehensive assessment of efforts to secure and remove vulnerable nuclear stockpiles around the world, and a detailed action plan for reducing the risk of nuclear terrorism. Securing the Bomb 2008 was commissioned by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI). The full report, with additional information on the threat of nuclear terrorism, is available on the NTI website.
