Former ISP Research Fellow and Associate Erica Chenoweth (2006–2010) and Former ISP/Intrastate Conflict Program Research Fellow Maria J. Stephan (2003–2005) have won the 2013 Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order for their book, Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict (Columbia University Press, 2011). 

Why Civil Resistance Works also won the 2012 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award, which the American Political Science Association gives annually to the best book on government, politics, or international affairs published in the U.S. during the previous calendar year.

Former ISP/Women and Public Policy Program Research Fellow Megan Mackenzie (2008–2009) is the author of "Let Women Fight: Ending the U.S. Military's Female Combat Ban" in Foreign Affairs, November–December 2012.

The Roles and Influence of the North Korean Military

The armed forces have always played a vital role for states as their guarantor of national security. In addition, the military has often been a political actor with varying degrees of power and influence over budgets, foreign and defense policy, or a full-blown military dictatorship. Some are also significant players in the state economy.
