PDP Principal Ashton B. Carter participates in Wehrkunde

Munich, Germany – From February 3-5, 2006, Ashton B. Carter, Co-Director of the Preventive Defense Project, was a delegate to the 42nd Munich Conference on Security Policy, "Peace Through Dialogue". As a member of the Congressional Delegation to Germany, led by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), Dr. Carter met with defense and foreign ministers from around the globe, including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who gave an address on Europe and the United States: A Test of Partnership, as well as other legislators, corporate leaders, and policy experts. The discussions centered on the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the United States and how best to restore this key partnership.
Other members of the delegation included Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Congressman Mark Udall (D-CO), Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA), Ambassador Daniel Coats, John Lehman, Brent Scowcroft, James Steinberg and R. James Woolsey. Themes covered at the conference ranged from global challenges for German foreign and security policy, to resolving conflicts through international cooperation, as well as NATO’s future role in international peace keeping, and global foreign policy and security interests in Asia. Among the current world leaders presenting were: the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, the French Minister of Defense Michèle Alliot-Marie, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sergey Ivanov, the National Security Advisor to the Republic of India M.K. Narayanan, and the German Federal Minister of Defense Franz Josef Jung.
