Belfer Center Programs or Projects: The Dubai Initiative

In a Dubai Initiative Seminar on April 6, Dr. Emile Nakhleh argued that proper engagement with the Islamic world is a matter of U.S. national security and in its national interest. He emphasized that if the U.S. wants to adequately address terrorism, it must work to understand more nuanced complexities within Islamic society. Further, he argued that the U.S. cannot continue to promote political and economic reform in the Muslim world without engaging with Islamist parties.  Discussing the importance of language, context, and a sophisticated approach to diplomacy, he outlined a strategy to better engage the Islamic world and supported steps President Obama has already begun to take to improve relations.
