Ambassador Marc Grossman, a retired senior diplomat and non-resident fellow with the Belfer Center’s Future of Diplomacy Project, has been named by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to serve as special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Grossman will succeed Richard Holbrooke, who died in December.

Grossman, who attained the Foreign Service’s highest rank of Career Ambassador in 2004, received the Secretary of State’s Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award the following year.  His diplomatic service included assignments in Pakistan and Turkey and he served as assistant secretary of state for European Affairs from 1997 to 2000.
