In the days before and after Mahmoud Abbas' bid for Palestinian statehood in the United Nations on September 23, MEI fellow Diana Buttu was interviewed by multiple media outlets regarding her take on the bid.
Buttu served as a legal advisor to the PLO in its negotiations with Israel from 2000 to 2005, and was the only female advisor on the two delegations. In 2005, she was appointed as a legal and communications advisor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. She is a joint fellow with the Middle East Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School and the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School.
