“I have no doubt in my mind that there is a great future of India-US relations,” Shyam Saran, former Foreign Secretary of India, said in a February 2012 interview with the Future of Diplomacy Project. The Obama Administration’s ‘Pivot to Asia,’ was behind his sense of optimism, he said.
In addition to sharing his views on the development of the Indo-US relationship, Saran also touched on two major challenges that policymakers needed confront, in his view: the final status of the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, and the progression of Indian sanctions against Iran. While the two issues would take some thought and political willpower to resolve, Saran expressed approval of the progress made so far. Both parties should remember that “we should be sensitive to the types of [domestic political] constraints that democracies have to work under.”
