For Research on Kuwait, the Gulf and the Arab World

Belfer Center Programs or Projects: Middle East Initiative
The Harvard Kennedy School is pleased to announce the Fall 2013 funding cycle for the Kuwait Program Research Fund. Thanks to the generous support of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, a Kennedy School faculty committee will consider applications for one-year grants (up to $50,000) and larger grants (up to $100,000 per year) for more extensive multi-year projects to support advanced research by Harvard University faculty members on issues of critical importance to Kuwait, the Gulf, and the Arab World. Grants can be applied toward research assistance, travel, summer salary, and course buy-out.
Priority will be given to the following subjects, although applications will be considered in other areas as well:
- Management of higher education in Kuwait
- Youth and their role in the future of the Arab World
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE GULF
- Transitioning the Kuwait economy away from oil and developing new areas of economic growth
- Transferring the economy from overreliance on the public sector to building a strong private sector
- How to attract foreign investment in a time of civil instability
- Political reform in Kuwait
- The Arab political transformation
SCIENCE, TECHONOLOGY AND INNOVATION
Proposals will be evaluated based on a) the direct involvement of Harvard faculty, b) the relevance and transferability of the research to Kuwait and the region, and c) the quality of the work plan, which should include an outreach component. Collaborative research with Kuwaiti academics and educational institutions is strongly encouraged.
