Ambassador Paula Dobriansky, under secretary of state for democracy and global affairs under President George W. Bush, and Sir John Gieve, former deputy governor of the Bank of England, have joined the Belfer Center as senior fellows.

Kurt Campbell and Michèle Flournoy, both alums of the Belfer Center, founded The Center for a New American Strategy in February 2007. The organization has grown into an intellectual, nonpartisan national think tank focusing on national security and defense.

The Winter 2008-09 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming research, activities, and analysis by Center faculty, fellows, and staff on critical global issues. "What should the next president do first?" is a question raised in this issue. Belfer Center experts respond to the question with advice on what they consider priority issues of national security, climate/energy policy, and the economic crisis.
The Winter 2008-09 issue also features take-aways from the Center’s recent “Acting in Time on Energy Policy” conference hosted by the Energy Technology Innovation Policy research group. In addition, it spotlights Belfer Center Faculty Affiliate Richard Clarke and new Kennedy School Professor Nicholas Burns.

"Managing the Atom's Matthew Bunn Named Associate Professor of Public Policy"

The Belfer Center's Matthew Bunn has been appointed associate professor of public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Bunn, co-principal investigator for the Belfer Center's Project on Managing the Atom and lead author of the Securing the Bomb series of reports, brings extensive experience and research on nuclear issues to the position.

Martin Malin has joined the Belfer Center as executive director of the Center's Project on Managing the Atom (MTA).

"Tribute to Ed McGaffigan: Country Loses Outstanding Public Servant"
Belfer Center Newsletter
Edward McGaffigan was a model of integrity, ability, and public service, according to Belfer Center Director Graham Allison and Harvard Distinguished Service Professor Joseph Nye. McGaffigan, who grew up in Boston and graduated from Harvard, was also a Kennedy School student (1974-75) and worked closely with Center faculty. He died earlier this month following a battle with cancer.

"November Conference to Examine Middle East Progress, Conflict"

On November 8, the Belfer Center's Dubai Initiative and the Dubai School of Government will sponsor a conference titled The Middle East: Between Progress and Conflict. Speakers and panelists at the conference will provide a framework for analyzing the divergent trends at play in the Middle East through academic discussions and policy-making debates.

"Q&A: Xenia Dormandy"

The Project on India and the Subcontinent is a new initiative of the Belfer Center, directed by former Executive Director for Research Xenia Dormandy. Its mission is to build knowledge, leadership, and recommendations on key policy-critical issues related to the rise of India and South Asia.
