International Security Program "Paths to Violence" Research Workshop
The International Security Program (ISP) at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs hosted a research workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 25, 2008. Workshop organizers Erica Chenoweth (ISP) and Adria Lawrence (ISP/Intrastate Conflict Program) brought together leading scholars to explore the conditions under which non-state actors resort to violence and the various strategies state actors use to address aggrieved populations. Workshop participants addressed issues such as why the use of violence varies among non-state actors, how the decision to use violence affects strategic outcomes of internal and international conflicts, and how states arrive at decisions to accommodate, assimilate, or ethnically cleanse minority groups. Participants received feedback on original research papers prepared in advance of the workshop. The final drafts of the papers will be compiled into an edited volume, which will be submitted for review in fall 2008.

Harvard Project on International Climate Agreements Research Workshop
The Harvard Project on International Climate Agreements hosted a research workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 13–14, 2008. The workshop brought together key scholars and other thinkers working on international climate change policy from a variety of disciplines, including economics, political science, and law. Together, they addressed issues such as how to persuade developing countries — among them China and India — to sign on to an international agreement, how to link climate policy with international trade, and how to effectively address deforestation, which accounts for 20 percent of global emissions. Attendees presented their initial research findings and got feedback on their ideas. The workshop was preceded by a reception and dinner at the Harvard Faculty Club, which featured Todd Stern, a partner at the law firm WilmerHale, as a keynote speaker. The final drafts of the research will be published in early fall 2008.

Pakistan Election Update and Analysis: The Polls

Pakistan's election will take place on Monday, and the army has been activated to ensure security: this security, however, is lacking. Parts of the FATA are restricted, so it's not clear how - or whether - polling will take place in some towns. Even within Pakistan, the election campaign weeks have been made most notable, not by the speeches of the candidates, but by the suicide bombings and those killed at events.

Plans for Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School Released
Architects presented the plans below to Broadmoor residents for the construction of the rebuilt Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School. Construction will begin this spring and continue in time for a September 2009 opening.
