Belfer Center Announces 2009-2010 Research Fellows

Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs today announced its 2009-2010 research fellows. The fellows, drawn from governments, academia, and the public sector, will work with Center faculty and fellows to research issues of critical significance internationally, ranging from security issues such as nuclear proliferation and terrorism to climate change and energy policy. The new fellows come from countries as diverse as South Korea, India, Egypt, Germany, and South Africa.

"Climate change requires an energy technology revolution, Chu says"

Secretary of Energy Steven Chu discussed the need for an aggressive national energy policy at a packed John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum event, “Laying the Foundation for the Next Generation of Clean Energy Jobs,” on August 6, 2009. He outlined challenges of global warming and potential strategies that could provide solutions.

Observations on the Recent United Nations Security Council Resolution on North Korea

On June 12, 2009, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1874 in response to recent provocative actions by North Korea, including a second nuclear test. Chinese and Russian support for a new U.N. Security Council resolution that imposes additional sanctions is potentially significant. However, whether China in particular will support tough implementation of the resolution and will take a harder line in its bilateral relations with North Korea remains to be seen, and will ultimately determine the success or failure of efforts to reverse North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

"U.S.-China Relations: Key Next Steps"

With the United States and China expected to be the two dominant powers in the twenty-first century, it is essential that they actively manage their relationship to avoid military conflict, a group of distinguished Chinese and American scholars said at a major conference in Washington, D.C. The scholars—from Harvard Kennedy School, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and elsewhere—have worked together for more than two years to create a blueprint for a new relationship between the two countries.

Senior Obama Administration and Chinese Government Officials Call for Rapid Development of "Clean" Coal Technologies

With both China and the United States relying heavily on coal for electricity, senior government officials from both countries urged immediate action to push forward technology that would reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired plants. The leaders spoke April 16 at a high-level workshop jointly hosted by China's Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Energy Technology Innovation Policy research group at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center. The workshop aimed to develop concrete and specific opportunities for U.S.-China cooperation on advanced coal technologies, and the group will submit policy recommendations to both the Obama Administration and the Chinese government.

"Obama-Medvedev Meeting -- Comments from Graham Allison, Chuck Hagel, and Matthew Bunn"
U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a joint statement after their meeting his week, which emphasized their desire to "move beyond Cold War mentalities." They agreed to seek a new version of the START treaty, and also committed their countries to a nuclear-free world.

Harvard Kennedy School Professor Joseph Nye, a member of the Belfer Center board of directors, is the most influential international relations scholar on U.S. foreign policy in the last 20 years, while the Belfer Center’s Stephen Walt and John Ruggie both rank among the 20 most influential academics in international relations, according to a biannual survey of international relations faculty by the Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) Project.

Demographic Projections Predict Fundamentalist Populations Surpassing Secular Counterparts

According to demographic projections, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian fundamentalists will gain significant ground against their liberal and secular counterparts by 2050, even surpassing them in some cases, Belfer Center Fellow Eric Kaufmann said at last week’s International Security Program (ISP) brownbag presentation.
