That President Barack Obama (Harvard Law School '91) enters office at a "hinge of history" is now a cliché, but no less true for having been often stated. Not only does the Great Recession look ever more depressing, but we simultaneously face daunting security challenges - from Iran's advancing nuclear program to increasing fragility of Pakistan.

Now more than ever, the current economic situation drives home the relationship between the economy and national security. Several of our Belfer Center colleagues — among them Larry Summers, Marty Feldstein, Paul Volcker, and Jeff Frankel — not only warned about the coming economic troubles well ahead of the rest of the pack, they also are leading the search for solutions.

In my course this spring on "Central Challenges of American Foreign Policy," I have students write strategic options memos to the President or other key national security officials in response to "mini-cases" that pose challenges on the agenda today.

We ended 2006 with a special event to honor our founders and to share tales of the beginnings of the Belfer Center. Transported back to our roots by Paul Doty and his three founding colleagues Al Carnesale, Dorothy Zinberg, and Michael Nacht we were educated and entertained with stories of the Center's early years.
