"Center Hosts Al Gore and Top Energy/Climate Experts in Climate Solutions Summit"

The Belfer Center hosted former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore and 30 of the United States' top energy and climate experts in October for a "Solutions Summit" on the climate challenge ... participants brainstormed concrete solutions to producing carbon-free electricity, using as a starting point Gore’s July 2008 Generational Challenge to Repower America, which calls on the nation to produce 100 percent of America's electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within ten years.

"Laura Diaz Anadon Leads Research in Low-Carbon Energy Technologies"

Laura Diaz Anadon, former chemical engineer and financial consultant, was named program manager of the Center’s Energy Technology Innovation Policy (ETIP) research group’s Energy Research Development & Deployment Policy (ERD3) this past summer. She heads the Center's efforts to produce and promote a comprehensive set of recommendations for the next U.S. administration to accelerate the development and deployment of low-carbon energy technologies.

While the world congratulated Beijing for its dazzling Olympic stadiums and the splendid opening ceremony, the Belfer Center's Hongyan Oliver argues that it should have also given the city another round of applause for its decade-long efforts to clean up its air. While some of these improvements were temporary, she notes, "its Olympic effort showed the world and China that it is capable of making great changes."

"Giving Green to Get Green: Incentives and Consumer Adoption of Hybrid Vehicle Technology"

Federal, state and local governments use a variety of incentives to induce consumer adoption of hybrid-electric vehicles. The authors study the relative efficacy of state sales tax waivers, income tax credits and non-tax incentives and find that the type of tax incentive offered is as important as the value of the tax incentive.

"Global Climate Disruption: What Do We Know? What Should We Do?"

"Global warming is a misnomer," said John P. Holdren, speaking at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at the Kennedy School on November 6. "It implies something gradual, uniform, and benign. What we’re experiencing is none of these."

Holdren also urged the United States to spearhead this effort, going from being a "laggard in climate policy to being a leader." Once that happens, he said, the rest of the world will follow suit.

Global Warning

Someone usually asks Holdren why we should be worried about it. Holdren, who has been thinking about climate change since the late 1960s, has a prepared list: “Heat waves, drought, wildfires, rising sea level, reduced agricultural productivity, damage to ocean fisheries, loss of coral reefs,” he says. “I mean, I have a much longer litany,” he reminds his audience. This isn’t just about beach erosion on Cape Cod or warmer summers in Europe, it’s about trying to preserve the conditions for our economic, social, and political well-being.

Economic Incentives in a New Climate Agreement

The Harvard Project on International Climate Agreements has agreed to help the Office of the Danish Prime Minister, in its role as incoming President of the 2009 Conference of the Parties, to prepare background papers and on-site briefings for a series of very high-level dialogues on climate change policy, hosted by the Prime Minister. These dialogues will each include about 25 participants, including CEOs of European and U.S. corporations, key officials from national governments and intergovernmental organizations, and leaders of major environmental NGOs. This paper on the subject of economic incentives was prepared by the Harvard Project leadership for the first dialogue.
